I hate the SLS Black. Mercedes took excellent grand tourer and turned it into a riced out racer. Sure unlike a true ricer the Black actually works but the lines are ruined and the character is destroyed.

THANK YOU! My thoughts exactly

Fair enough.

I'm with you too!

If that spoiler was taken off it would be 90% better.

I don't know man the gigantic running boards and what not also ruin the lines. Although I do agree it would be better.

I strongly disagree!
Look at the SLS Racecar.
Look at the Black.
Now back to the racecar.
Back to the Black.
I'm on a horse.

I respectfully disagree.

In Germany you could order it without the spoilers, they were standard in the US and you couldn't delete...it's why I didn't "upgrade."
But I agree, it looks great as is:

Agree 100%. Still, a Black is a Black, and in Black it looks much less riced out. Still, a Black is a Black, but better if its in Black.

could not agree more. There's a right way to do big wings and shit (GT3 RS, for example) and there's a wrong way. The SLS Black is very much on the wrong side of the equation in my eyes.

Are you on a fast black horse?

I must admit it does look a little better but nothing in the Mercedes lineup could ever beat the original

This comment wins!

Exactly. It depends on the style of the car. Sometimes a little restraint goes miles with desirability.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 21:23 |

Would you still take one if Big Bird offered you an SLS Black as your company car?
![]() 07/15/2014 at 21:24 |

If it's wrong, then I don't ever want to be right.

Anyone know if it's possible to update the firmware on the standard car to get the Black's transmission settings?
The Black's DCT apparently shifts much faster than the standard car's does. If you could update the firmware for the standard car then you could have the best of both worlds. Understated looks with effectively the same DCT as the Ferrari 458.

Totally agree, and I'm gonna take it a step further.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Mansory (yes, Mansory) has a better looking SLS than the Black Series.
They kept... most... of the original lines, but I like it more than the Black Series. However, from the front, well damn it I'd rather have the original SLS.

I disagree. They went function over form. Race cars are ugly. Raw aerodynamics are ugly. We appreciate them because we know what they're for but at the end of the day a purely aerodynamic vehicle is ugly. That's what's happened to the SLS. They gave it an aero kit, wing, and everything that disrupts its pretty pretty lines and curves to improve... What? Aerodynamics
![]() 07/15/2014 at 21:45 |

Damn you're right it is better. Wow Mercedes really did get it wrong
![]() 07/15/2014 at 21:47 |

I understand it is improved aero however I don't think this is a car that should have improved aero. It isn't that type of car

I've never been much of a fan of the SLS. It's a bit bland looking for me. I generally prefer the Black, but can do without the spoiler and front bumper canards.

no matter what the car someone somewhere will try to racecar it. In this case it was AMG.

Weistec will flash your transmission ECU with the Black series software for a price. It's the exact same transmission. In fact, it's the same transmission used in the 458, MP4-12C, F12, etc.

That's pretty cool! Are you going to do it once your warranty is up (if it's not up already)?
I knew it was the same box that Ferrari uses but I didn't know that Macca uses it too. Thanks for that intel.

It's on the todo list, post-warranty, but it might be a while. I've got five years and 78k miles left on the warranty.

don't let anyone tell you to stop being you
now let's see some aero on that there FoMoCo

You talkin bout my Pinto Wagon that I really need to start working on again one day? Because if you are then, yes I do eventually plan on adding a chin spoiler and a wing like the Trans Am Boss 302's, but that would only come after I put a Mustang Cobra IRS in the back and a V8 under the fiberglass hood. And I would have to custom make and design it all...
![]() 07/15/2014 at 22:25 |

Wow you still have a ton of warranty!
Did you buy CPO or buy an extended warranty?
![]() 07/15/2014 at 22:34 |

Bought the extended warranty, figured if I plan to keep it forever I might as well.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 22:37 |

GOOD CALL!
I would have done the same
![]() 07/15/2014 at 23:10 |

I think small integrated duckbill style spoiler would have looked really nice too.
Because Duckbill.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 23:57 |

How is it not that type of car? If you buy an SLS and you want to track it, you get the black. Underneath it is almost identical to the racecar versions. Biggest changes are safety items and things for track regulations vs. street legality.

pretty sure the target audience for these thinks the more expensive and ostentatious they are the better, and Merc couldn't be happier to make and sell them because I'm sure they have a very healthy margin.
